  • Thank you 2007: A Chennaivision special

Remakes, Remix and Rajini. A look back (or flashback) at the past year happenings of Kollywood makes us to classify Tamil cinema in these three words, as these Rs literally ruled the entire year.

As far as remakes are concerned, the year started with Vijay starrer Pokkiri, a remake of Telugu blockbuster of the same title. The film created waves in Tamil boxoffice too, attributing to four factors- Script, Vijay, Asin and Vadivelu. And at the end of the year, Kollywood witnessed the release of Billa, a remake of yesteryear cult film of Rajnikanth titled the same. Starring Ajit, Nayantara and Namitha in key roles and directed by Vishnuvardhan, the movie managed to catapult Ajit back to fame.

Coming to the remix genre, it is old wine in the new bottle, so to say. A host of yesteryear superhit songs were remixed in 2007 with a Westernised touch. Some of them are include Engeyum Eppodhum by G V Prakash, Ponmagal Vandhal by AR Rahman, My Name is Billa, Andru Vandhadhum Athae Nila by Yuvanshankar Raja, Sorgham Madhuvilae by Karthikraja and Enadi Muniamma, Nan Yaar Nee Yar by D Imman.

It would not be an exaggeration, if we say that the year literally belonged to Superstar Rajnikanth. The man with maximum hits in Tamil cinema, he went on to assert his supremacy with one of the costliest movies to have ever been made in Kollywood- Sivaji. Produced by AVM and directed by Shankar, the film went on to become a huge hit all across the globe. The movie was released in over 850 screens and even in countries where Tamil movies were never opened in theatres before.

Also, Kollywood has a fresh breath in the year, as corporate giants entered and pumped in money in the industry. Some of them include Pyramid Saimira (distribution of many films includng Billa, ATM and Vel), Adlabs (Kireedam), UTV (Kannamoochi Enada), GV Films (distributor of Sivaji), Moser Baer (Mozhi) and Aynkaran International (Billa distribution and producer of Ajith’s next film).

The year 2007 also saw some promising faces and themes. Success of reality oriented films like Paruthiveeran, Mozhi, Chennai 600028 and Kalloori has brought a fresh lease of life to Tamil cinema. Coming to new faces, Karthi, actor Surya's younger, model-turned-actor Vinay, who made his debut with Unnale Unnale and Andrea in Pachaikili Muthucharam deserve a special mention.

Like the previous years, 2007 too is no exception from controversies. Some of the familiar rows were- Prashanth-Grihalakshmi divorce case, slapping of actress Padmapriya by director Sami, charges against Kushboo for wearing slippers in front of idols of Hindu Goddesses and the mega serial like Srikanth-Vandhana marriage.

In total, the year that passed has given hope to the Tamil film industry in many ways and has laid path for a better future. So, Thank you 2007 and Welcome 2008.
