Clandestine candle (Thoondil – Review)

Adhiyaman is almost a synonym with striking storyline, gripping screenplay and interesting narration. Right from Thottasinungi to Priyasakhi (not withstanding a few Hindi movies), he has proved his prowess as an able director. In Thoondil too, the filmmaker comes with a novel knot, which is totally new to Tamil cinema.

Yes, Adhiyaman deals with ‘egg donation’, a process by which a woman provides eggs for another woman who wants to have a child. However, at a time when you think that the director needs to be appreciated for having handled a theme which was so far there in medical text books alone, the ‘Baywatch’ kind of overdosed glamour will makes you to think twice.

Well, the story is about Sriram (Shaam) and Anjali (Sandhya), a happy couple leading their life in London. There comes a problem in their smooth life, as Anjali cannot conceive a child due to her inability to produce eggs.

However, thanks to the painstaking efforts of a gynaecologist (Revathi), Anjali gives bith to a baby. When she is on cloud nine, her child is kidnapped by Divya (Divya Spandana), who claims that it was hers as she donated egg to Anjali. Surprisingly, Divya is none other than the former lover of Sriram. What happens next forms an interesting climax.

Shaam, who is in dire need of a break comes out a riveting performance. Similar is the show of Sandhya and Divya. However, the real show stealer (?) is Divya. She appears in many scenes as if someone had snatched away her costumes.

This review would be incomplete if there is no mention about Vivekh. After Sivaji, the comedian has come out with roaring comedy scenes, which evokes thunderous applause in the theatre.

Music by Abhishek Roy is up to the mark. Had the director avoided some of the over exposed scenes, Thoondil could have been a more interesting, impressive show.
