Wild and whammy - Mirugam – Review

Showing all possible unchaste activities throughout the film. And justifying them with a moral at the end. This is the basic knot director Sami has taken in Mirugam. It is obvious that the filmmaker, who was already criticised for showing a woman lusting after her brother-in-law in his first film Uyir, wanted to ignite yet another controversy through this movie.

Large scale womanising (not even leaving a beggar woman on the streets), consuming liquor all the time, homosex, getting addicted to drugs, beating own mother, chasing pregnant wife in a wild way. You name any impure act, and you can find it in Mirugam.

At the time when Tamil cinema is scaling great heights in terms of narration, technology and decent way of story telling, this film is a major letdown as it lacks basic ethics right from the first scene. The producer of Mirugam, who is now opposing the Censor Board for not allowing a jallikattu scene, should have actually thanked it for permitting the film to hit theatres.

Mirugam is about Ayyanar (Adhi), a hardcore womaniser who forcinates with every second woman he meets. One day he comes across Alagamma (Padmapriya), whose nickname is pump set (because she attained maturity near a pump set) and marries her with a sole purpose of sex. He brutally rapes her in the first night itself.

However, Alagamma takes it as a challenge to change her husband. With destiny taking a different route, Ayyanar goes to jail following a drunken fight, where he gets the taste of homosex and ganja. After coming out, he continues with his routine and lands up in AIDS. The remaining story revolves on how Alagamma stood with him till end.

Thotta Tharani's village set is the only solace of this film. Samy, who had been slapped with one-year ban for allegedly attacking Padmapriya on sets, should use this as an opportunity to shape up a decent script and to prove himself that he can make watchable films too.

Mirugam- Sorry
