Casting on caste - Pirappu

Black and white shot scenes at the beginning, elopement and marriage of a couple, meaty knot speaking about inter-caste marriage. Pirappu starts like this in an interesting way, which later moves into predictable scenes and not so racy screenplay. However, director L V Elangovan deserves kudos for testing waters with such a caste-centric story which is not preferable by many of the debutants.

Childless couple Marudhu (Sahadevan) and Kannama (Saranya) adopts Kannan (Prabha), who is from a downtrodden family. Meanwhile, Sankarapandi's daughter (Mayuka) falls in love with Kannan. Though he was caste conscious, Sankarapandi gives green signal for his daughter's love, eyeing the assets of Marudhu. However, Kannan refuses to tie knot to Mayuka since he loves Karthika. This fuels the anger of Sankarapandi and the tit for tat sequences, which leaves the audience a message.

Prabha has got the looks of a hero. However, he has to work a lot to sustain as an actor in Kollywood where the field is only for the fittest. After Thoothukudi, Karthika dons the heroine role in Pirappu with enough efforts. New face Mayuka is an apt selection for the role. It was business as usual for Saranya.

Plus points of the movie are the camera works of Shanki Mahendra and the music of Bharadwaj. Producer H G Pramila Ganesh's guts can be seen throughout the movie.

Elangovan had tried to tell a message to the society, in which he had succeeded to an extent. Pirappu would have emerged as a much better film, if the director had concentrated in fresh scenes and screenplay.
