At the time when Tamil cinema has fallen prey to the commercial dragula, which always demands run-of-the-mill kind of masala stories, Katradhu Tamil is surely a relief from the usual stuff. However, a question which rises parallely is that isn't there anything new other than psychopath or mentally deranged stories like Sethu, Pithamagan, Raam and the latest
Tamil MA, when it come to different films.
Director Ram, who makes his debut with Tamil MA, attempts to tell the story of a deranged angry young man, who gets fed-up with the society. When compared to the respect and money an IT professional gets, Prabakharan (Jeeva), a post graduate in Tamil gets peanuts for his love towards the mother tounge.
Is this the justice? Is this the equality that we are talking for years? Or is this the plight of anyone who takes Tamil as his subject? Prabakaran thinks. As a result, he takes the system in his hands. The result is cold-blooded murders of anyone and everyone who irks him on his way. Meanwhile, the film also talks about the affair Prabakaran had with Anandi (Anjali), his childhood sweetheart.
Katradhu Tamil is a straight six from the bat of Jeeva, as the actor known for toil he takes to don different roles delivers his best. He literally transforms himself as Prabakaran throughout the movie. New face Anjalai is a delight to watch with her stunning performance.
Yuvan Shankar Raja's music speaks volume about the depth of the theme which the film dwells on. Kadhir's camera captures the mood aptly. Director Ram, while deserving a shot in the arm for coming out with a different movie, should also know that there is a lot to tell in the silver screen and a psychopath story with litres of blood spilling on screen is not the only way to attempt novel.
Katradhu Tamil- Educated and edgy.
