Cheran and S J Suryah are the two directors, who emerged as heroes in the recent years. Praveen Kanth too had attempted the same in Thullal, but perhaps taking the cue from the latter. Resembling S J Suryah movies, Thullal is overflowing with glamour and double meaning dialogues and would even give a sense of inferiority to him in some scenes, so to say.
However, Praveen who had earlier directed Ratchagan, Jodi and Star had succeeded in establishing himself as a hero in Kollywood by coming out with a youthful subject backed by the comedy of Vivekh. Moreover, his guts to release the film just a couple of weeks after the release of Superstar Rajinikanth starrer Sivaji is also laudable.
Donning the role of a playboy, Praveen seduces Gurlin Chopra by portraying himself as a true lover. With the attempts made by Gurlin’s friend Sonika to stop Praveen proving futile, series of events lead even Sonika to fall in Praveen’s dragnet. Sonika marries Praveen, but with a promise that he should not touch her until she gives permission. At the time when Sonika decides to loose the noose following the changed activities of Praveen, there comes
Gurlin. What happens next form an interesting climax.
To live up to the playboy character, Praveen utilized opportunities to the maximum in romance scenes. Being new faces, both Gurlin and Sonika had no other options than giving nod to him. Vivekh comedy comes as a sigh of relief in Thullal. In stunt and dance sequences, Praveen’s hard work is apparent in the movie.
On the flip side, delay in the release of Thullal gives us a deja vu feeling. Also, the film would be better if Praveen had avoided double meaning dialogues. ‘Pottalam Katradhu’ is a perfect example.
