A sigh of relief for fishermen

July 23, 2008:As many as 14 fishermen on Monday received compensation amount totalling Rs 64.45 lakh, granted by the Tamilnadu government, nearly four years after their boats, seized by the Sri Lankan Navy were badly damaged in the tsunami.

During the grievances day hearing, Nagapattinam district Collector N Jayaraman handed over the cheques to the fishermen.

According to a press release from the Collector, the owners of the boats and fishermen associations had petitioned the Chief Minister M Karunanidhi seeking relief. Following this, the Chief Minister passed orders for payment of compensation varying from Rs 75,000 to Rs five lakh.
