Court awards 5-yr RI in Kaifiyat Express coaches-gutting case


New Delhi, Nov 20 : A city court today sentenced Akbar Sheikh to five-year rigorous imprisonment for burning two bogies of the Kaifiyat Express at Old Delhi Railway Station in 2003.

Additional Sessions Judge R K Jain found Sheikh guilty under Section 435, IPC and Section 151 of the Indian Railways Act.

A fire gutted two vacant sleeper coaches of the Kaifiyat Express, which runs between Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, at the Old Delhi Railway Station on November 2003. There was no one in the bogies when the incident occurred.

A reward of Rs 50,000 was announced by the Delhi Police and Rs one lakh by the Indian Railways for giving information in the case.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5000 on the convict.
