Chennai, Nov 19 :The Tamil Nadu unit of Communist Party of India (Marxist) today urged the state government to appoint a sitting High court judge to probe into the violent clash between two groups of students in the Dr Ambedkar Law College here on November 12.

CPI(M) state unit secretary N Varadarajan, in a statement here said the state executive, which met here on November 18 and 19, had adopted a resolution to this effect.

He said Chief Minister M Karunandhi's remarks that AIADMK leader J Jayalalithaa and MDMK leader Vaiko might have instigated the clash to seek his resignation were not acceptable.

The Chief Minsiter's remarks after ordering a judicialprobe, would affect the probe, he said adding instead of appointing a retired Supreme Court judge, the government should appoint a sitting judge.

He said it was shocking that the students clash had caste connotation and the police stood in silence when the students attacked each other.

Mr Varadarajan said in another resolution, the state executive demanded that the state government must hike the wages paid under the National Rural Employment Gurantee Programme(NREGP) to Rs 150 per day.

The government should note that the CAG had said that only 1824 families were given employment for 100 days and they were also being paid less wages than the prescribed amount, he said.
