MDMK volunteers observe fast, demand immediate ceasfire in SL

Chennai, Nov 19 : Volunteers of Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK), led by its General Secretary Vaiko, today observed a day's fast here, demanding immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka.

Today's fast marked the culmination of a week-long fast, observed by the party volunteers at various places in the state for the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Vaiko said it was unfortunate that the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre continued to be indifferent to the demand for ceasefire, despite series of agitations and protests by various sections in Tamil Nadu.

Even after the Tamil Nadu Assembly adopted an unanimous resolution, urging the Centre to prevail upon the Lankan government to ensure ceasefire, the Manmohan Singh government has not taken any action, he charged.

Stating that innocent Tamils were targeted in the military offensive, the MDMK leader, a staunch supporter of the LTTE, urged the Centre to exert pressure on Sri Lanka and ensure that the island government declare ceasefire and save the Tamils.
