MLAs get a hike in salary


May 15, 2008: Tamilnadu Finance Minister Anbazhagan on Wednesday announced in the Assembly that the salary of the MLAs would be increased from Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000.

The pension to ex-MLAs would be raised to Rs 8,000 from the existing Rs 7,000. After the death of a legislator, his family would receive Rs 4,000 instead of Rs 3,000. These would come into retrospective effect from April this year.

Also, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi announced that the MLA Welfare Fund was increased from Rs 1.2 crore to Rs 1.5 crore. He also said that all the members would be provided jeeps at a total cost of Rs 12 crore.
