CM announces Rs 2 crore to Viswanathan Anand

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday richly rewarded chess wizard Viswanathan Anand with a purse of Rs 2 crore for becoming the world champion for a fifth time defeating Israeli challenger Boris Gelfand in Moscow.

In recognition of his achievement in retaining the World Chess Championship crown, "Chief minister J Jayalalithaa is pleased to honour him by sanctioning a cash reward of Rs 2 crore," a State government release said on Friday.

Anand defeated challenger Boris Gelfand of Israel in a tense rapid chess tiebreaker to win the World Championship crown for the fourth time in a row in Moscow on May 30.

Meanwhile, a royal reception awaits World Champion Viswanathan Anand when he arrives Chennai today after winning the World Chess crown for the fifth time.

Officials of the All India Chess Federation (AICF) and from the Tamil Nadu Chess Association (TNCA) would accord a rousing welcome at the Anna International airport when he arrives by an Emirates Airlines flight from Dubai.
