Rome, June 4 (IANS/AKI) An 18th century clock-tower that withstood the devastating earthquakes in northern Italy last month, has crumbled under the force of strong aftershocks.
The Novi di Modena tower in Emilia-Romagna region crashed to the ground Sunday during a 5.1 magnitude aftershock.
On May 20, a 5.9 quake left gaping holes in the tower.
But it resisted dozens of aftershocks, including a 5.8 temblor May 29.
Officials said it became a type of symbol of steadfast resistance to a disaster that killed around two dozen people, left 18,000 homeless, and caused around five billion euros worth of damage.
Monday was a national day of mourning for the quake victims. |
