The government has raised the retirement age of Vice-Chancellors of nine State universities from 65 years to 70 through an ordinance.
As the Assembly is not in session, the Governor has promulgated an ordinance to amend Tamilnadu Universities Laws with effect from 14 July.
At present, the Vice-Chancellors of Bharathiar University, Bharathidasan University, Mother Teresa Women’s University, Alagappa University, Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Periyar University, Tamilnadu Open University, Thiruvalluvar University and Tamilnadu Teachers Education University, can be in office up to the age of 65 as per the Acts of these universities.
Now, the government has decided to amend the Acts to raise the retirement age to 70 years on par with the Central Universities Act, 2009, 'to utilise the knowledge gained by the academics for the enrichment of education in the State,' stated an explanatory note to the ordinance. |
