A 22-year-old polytechnic student committed suicide after three youths first filmed her while she was taking bath and then raped her by threatening to post the clippings on the internet. Police have arrested the three youths, all college students.
Akila, a third-year student of polytechnics institute in Chengam, had left a suicide note saying that she was being harassed and threatened by the three students.
“They had taken a video while I was bathing without my knowledge a few days ago. They told me that they will upload everything on the Internet if I do not do what they ask. I have been doing it for a while. I cannot handle this humiliation any more,” she said in the note.
The body has been sent to the Christian Medical College, Vellore, for postmortem. Police have also sought additional medial tests to ascertain rape.
The three youths were booked on charges of rape, abetment to suicide, house trespass and under various sections of the IT Act, 2000 and the Tamil Nadu Women Harassment Act, 1988. The three were arrested and their mobile phone was seized on Tuesday morning. The youths claimed that they have deleted the clippings from the mobile. |
