Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa Friday sanctioned Rs 5.46 crore to upgrade infrastructure at cooperative tea factories in Nilgiris district and also permitted INDCOSERVE to spend Rs 54 lakh from its own fund to renovate the buildings.
According to an official press release, the Chief Minister ordered providing workable rates to tea farmers based on market conditions. She allotted Rs 6 crore for the purpose.
The release said that Jayalalithaa has been taking various initiatives to improve the living condition of such farmers.
It recalled that she had announced a hike of Rs two-per kg of green tea procured from small farmers, who are members of the cooperative tea industries in Nilgiris district.
The hike is on par with Rs eight paid by private companies for one kg of green tea, and it would benefit 22,000 small farmers who are members of the 15 cooperative tea factories in the district.
