On Wednesday, when Anna University regained its status as the sole affiliating technical university in Tamil Nadu, Professor Kaliraj assumed charge as officiating Vice Chancellor.
The state higher education department announced on Tuesday that P Kaliraj, dean of the Alagappa College of Technology, will perform the duties of the vice-chancellor of Anna University Chennai from Wednesday, when the merger of the five Anna Universities of Technology with the university comes into effect.
Professor Kaliraj, who belongs to the biotechnology department, is the senior most professor in the university. He replaces the three-member convenor committee that has been managing the university's affairs after professor P Mannar Jawahar completed his term as vice-chancellor.
Managing the recently merged institutions will not be difficult, the new V-C believes. “We are not closing down any infrastructure. The regional directors and officers will supervise and operationalise processes, and we have registrars and deputy registrars as well.”
