Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday refuted DMK supremo M Karunanidhi’s allegation that the State government acted at the last minute on the move to demolish the Anna Arch in Anna Nagar.
“Does not the five-time chief minister (Karunanidhi) know that government decisions are taken at several levels according to business rules?” she asked and said that none had consulted her either on the flyover project or the demolition of the Anna Arch. “Nor have I passed any orders in this regard,” Jayalalithaa said.
Jayalalithaa on Wednesday announced that the Anna Arch at Arumbakkam, one of the landmarks of Chennai city, would not be removed for constructing a flyover and the location of the flyover would be shifted slightly so that the Arch would not be disturbed.
On Saturday, Karunanidhi demanded an explanation from the government on the decision to demolish the Arch and the subsequent plan to retain it.
“There is no truth in the allegation,” the Chief Minister said, adding that she came to know about the demolition only through media reports and immediately issued orders for stopping demolition of the structure, one of the landmarks of Chennai.
