Dec 8, 2009: The Karnataka High Court on Monday permitted the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), Tamil Nadu, to withdraw prosecution against former Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary
J Jayalalithaa in the London Hotels case.
Jayalalithaa and several other accused including her close aide Sasikala are facing trial two cases (the disproportionate assets case and London Hotels case) in a Special Court in Bangalore.
As the Special Court had dismissed an application by the DVAC seeking permission to withdraw prosecution against Jayalalithaa in the London Hotels case, a criminal revision petition was filed in the High Court against the Special Court order.
In the petition, the DVAC and Special Public Prosecutor in the cases B V Acharya contended that the charges in the London Hotels case were likely to fail for lack of evidence and prospect of successful prosecution was remote.
